Ray-Ban Meta smart camera glasses: Meta is Crossing Apple with this Smart Gadget! HOW?

Ray-Ban Meta smart camera glasses

Ray-Ban Meta smart camera glasses: Meta’s approach to face computers focuses on what you can do right now. Apple’s approach, on the other hand, emphasizes what you will be able to do in the future.  The Ray-Ban Meta glasses offer a comprehensive set of features, with a focus on a functional camera and convenient integration with social apps, all packed in a user-friendly design.

The new pair, calledRay-Ban Meta,” is a lot better than the first version, called Ray-Ban Stories. The cameras are much improved, the battery lasts longer, and it fixes one of the ethical issues that many reviewers pointed out in the original pair.

Ray-Ban Meta VS Vision Pro

Face computers, like the Ray-Ban Meta Smart Glasses and Apple Vision Pro, show us a glimpse of the future, but both companies acknowledge that the world isn’t quite ready for full-fledged augmented reality. These devices aim to prepare the public for what’s coming by offering a taste of it now.

In this comparison, Meta’s smart glasses seem to do a better job in this aspect. The Apple Vision Pro is impressive in terms of technological innovation, making it the most advanced mixed reality headset the writer has tried. However, Apple focused on creating the best possible headset using current technology, while Meta opted for more affordable gadgets that people can enjoy right now.

Ray-Ban Meta smart camera glasses: In the world of consumer technology, there’s a common rule: the second version of a new product type is usually way better than the first. The improvements are so noticeable that you might wonder how you ever managed with the first version. For example, the second iPhone had a faster network and GPS, which the first one didn’t have. Similarly, the second Galaxy Fold made the original seem like a delicate toy when it was first released.

Hardware and designy

Ray-Ban Meta smart camera glasses: The Ray-Ban Meta glasses mostly resemble a regular pair of Ray-Ban glasses. The frame is a bit thicker than usual, but the added thickness is mainly in the arms. The front part, the part facing outward, looks normal, and most people wouldn’t realize it contains a 12MP camera capable of taking photos at 3024 x 4032 resolution and shooting 1080p videos at 30fps. The significant improvement is in the camera: the original pair had a modest 5MP camera that captured much lower-resolution images and videos.

The camera is on the left side of the glass frame, as shown in the photo. It’s small enough that people wouldn’t really notice it unless they’re very close to your face. On the right side, in the same position, there’s an LED indicator light that lights up when the cameras are in use. This light is brighter and larger than the one on the first-generation glasses, addressing concerns that the glasses could be used to film people without their consent.

The bigger LED light, which flashes on and off during video recording, draws more attention, acting as a good deterrent against filming people without them knowing. Ray-Ban and Meta also added a proximity sensor around the LED light, ensuring the camera can’t be used if the light is covered.

Style and Comfort

Ray-Ban Meta smart camera glasses: The glasses are available in two styles, and I chose the classic Wayfarer in matte black with polarized lenses that darken in sunlight. Weighing about 50g (1.76oz), they sit comfortably on my face.

Audio and Voice Recognition

The glasses have five hidden microphones that effectively pick up my voice even in noisy environments with background music. Two speakers, one on each arm, provide good audio quality for voices like podcasts, phone calls, or AI assistant interactions. However, the music audio lacks bass.

Features and Construction

With 32GB of built-in storage, the glasses feature a solid hinge construction comparable to regular Ray-Ban glasses. However, the arms feel less flexible than other smart glasses I’ve tried, like the XReal Air.

Charging and Case

The glasses come with a faux-leather carrying pouch that also serves as a charger. Charging is done through magnetic pogo pins at the frame’s base, connecting to a slot inside the case. The case has a USB-C port at the bottom. While the pouch is more compact than the previous generation’s case, it feels softer, offering somewhat less protection. There’s some stiffness, but I’m not confident the glasses would survive if accidentally sat on.

This breakdown should help you understand the various aspects of the Ray-Ban Meta glasses more clearly.

App and Setup

To use the glasses, you need to download the Meta View app from the Google Play Store or Apple App Store. The glasses won’t work until you’ve installed the app and gone through the pairing process. You must also have a Facebook or Instagram account, but given their widespread use, this requirement seems reasonable. The Meta View app is an improvement over the first-generation app, and connecting is usually seamless.

Usage and Connectivity

Ray-Ban Meta smart camera glasses: Once the glasses are on, they turn on automatically and provide a voice prompt about the battery level. Connecting to a paired phone is typically smooth. The glasses can also function as wireless earbuds, playing audio from the phone through their speakers. While audio quality is fine for podcasts and calls, music sounds somewhat flat.

Camera and AI Assistant

The primary attraction is the camera, and it delivers good results. Photos and videos may not match smartphone quality but surpass many small body/head-worn cameras. You can capture content with a button press or voice command like “Hey Meta, take a photo.” The glasses also feature their AI voice assistant, capable of handling complex queries. However, the practicality of having in-depth conversations with an AI in voice form is questionable.

Practical Features and Integration

The glasses integrate with Facebook and WhatsApp, allowing the AI assistant to read incoming WhatsApp messages. Battery life is commendable, with about 90 minutes of music playback draining only about 20%. Continuous video recording is limited to one minute per clip, making it challenging to assess battery life accurately. The charging case adds approximately 30 hours of usage time, alleviating battery concerns.

Reasons to Get Ray-Ban Meta smart camera glasses:

  • If you want a hands-free camera to capture moments in your daily life.
  • If you’re interested in Ray-Ban sunglasses and don’t mind spending a bit extra for added smart features.
  • If you’re looking for a hands-free device for simple voice assistant queries.

Reasons Not to Get Ray-Ban Meta smart camera glasses:

  • If you don’t see the need for a hands-free camera in your daily activities.
  • If you already own the original Ray-Ban Stories and are satisfied with the camera quality.
