The World Car of the Year Award was established in 2018, with Hakan Samuelsson, President and CEO of Volvo Car Group, being the inaugural recipient of the award. The following year, in 2019, Sergio Marchionne, who served as CEO of FCA, Chairman of CNH Industrial, and Chairman and CEO of Ferrari, claimed the prestigious accolade. In 2020, Carlos Tavares, CEO of PSA Group, was honored with the award.

Akio Toyoda, President and CEO of Toyota Motor Corporation received the recognition in 2021. Luc Donckerwolke, Executive VP for Design and Chief Creative Officer at Hyundai Motor Group, was the recipient in 2022. Lastly, SangYup Lee, Executive VP and Head of Hyundai and Genesis Global Design Center at Hyundai Motor Company, was awarded the title in 2023.

Amin Sayani and his team played a key role in launching BMW Operating Systems 8.5 and 9. They also introduced the AirConsole gaming platform in the latest BMW 5 series. Additionally, they were responsible for the innovative ‘BMW Panoramic Vision’ head-up display showcased in the BMW i Vision Dee vehicle at CES in 2023.

This unique display spans the entire width of the windshield, making it visible to all occupants of the vehicle. The groundbreaking ‘Panoramic Vision‘ is set to debut in BMW’s Neue Klasse vehicles in 2025.

2. Adrian Newey (CTO at Red Bull Racing)

Adrian Newey, serving as the Chief Technical Officer at Red Bull Racing, is the mastermind behind the RB19, a Formula One race car that achieved unprecedented dominance. In 2023, the RB19 triumphed in 21 out of 22 races, contributing to Red Bull’s sixth team championship and securing Max Verstappen’s third individual World Championship. This success also established RB19’s design as a model followed by many competitors in the field. With over 35 years in Formula 1 and a remarkable record of designing cars that have secured over 200 victories, Adrian Newey currently stands at the pinnacle of his illustrious career.

3. Andreas Preuninger

Top 5 Finalists Shortlisted For The 2024 World Car Person of the Year Award:  Andreas Preuninger, also known as ‘Mr. GT’ has been overseeing Porsche’s GT cars since 2000. In 2023, he unveiled two distinct GT models that garnered attention in the automotive world – the 718 Spyder RS and the 911 S/T, both designed to provide maximum driving pleasure. The 718 Spyder, an open version derived from the track-focused 718 Cayman GT4 RS, prioritizes driving enjoyment rather than track performance. Surprisingly, it is even lighter than its coupe counterpart. On the other hand, the 911 S/T holds the title of being the lightest 911 from the 992 generation and serves as the official anniversary car celebrating 60 years of the Porsche 911. Legendary driver Walter Rohrl has acclaimed it as ‘simply the best road car ever built.’

4.  C V Raman (CTO Maruti Suzuki)

Top 5 Finalists Shortlisted For The 2024 World Car Person of the Year Award:  C.V. Raman, the Chief Technical Officer at Maruti Suzuki India, boasts a four-decade tenure with the company, where he now spearheads the development of global models. Over the years, he played a crucial role in transferring technology and engineering expertise from Japan to the Indian operation.

However, his recent focus has shifted towards building in-house teams and capabilities in India. In 2023, this effort came to fruition with the introduction of the 5-door Jimny, a project for which Raman led the entire redesign and reengineering. Additionally, he played a key role in the development of the new

Fronx subcompact crossover model line, designed and manufactured in India but intended for the global market. These achievements have significantly elevated Suzuki’s India operations on the international stage for the first time.

5. Lisa Reeves (Head of Interior Design at Volvo Cars)

Top 5 Finalists Shortlisted For The 2024 World Car Person of the Year Award:  Lisa Reeves, serving as the Head of Interior Design at Volvo Cars, stands out for creating some of this year’s most imaginative interior designs. At Volvo, a company deeply rooted in human-centricity and sustainability, Lisa embodies these values in her work. Her designs strike a balance between playfulness and sophistication, seamlessly incorporating the form-follows-function principle.

One notable example of her design prowess is evident in the Volvo EX30, a car engineered to boast the lowest carbon footprint among all Volvo models to date. The EX30 showcases a distinctive approach to storage solutions and utilizes natural and recycled materials, exemplifying Volvo’s commitment to environmentally friendly and innovative design.
