On Saturday, the Madhya Pradesh Congress denied rumors that veteran party member Kamal Nath and his son, MP Nakul Nath, were planning to join the BJP. During a press conference, PCC president Jitu Patwari dismissed the news about former Chief Minister Kamal Nath as unfounded.

Patwari highlighted the longstanding connection between the Nath family and the Nehru-Gandhi family, dating back to the 1970s. He spoke about Nath’s 45-year political journey, emphasizing his seven-year term as Congress president in Madhya Pradesh and his consistent support for the party.

“In his 45-year political career, he spent the last seven years as the president of the Congress in Madhya Pradesh,” Patwari stated. “He stood alongside all of us Congress workers and remained dedicated to the party in every situation. By understanding the concerns of the people, he led us to fulfill our responsibilities boldly while serving as the opposition,” he added.

“I remember the moment when Jyotiraditya Scindia toppled the Congress govt.  Even then, every Congress worker stood under the guidance and leadership of Kamal Nath,” he said.  “I want to say that the news is baseless.  Can anyone ever imagine that Indira ji’s third son can leave Congress? Can this thought ever come even in dreams? Just two months ago we fought elections and every Congress worker kept sacrificing everything to make Kamal Nath the chief minister.  Can Kamal Nath talk about abandoning us? When Scindia was toppling the govt, our supporters were being beaten up by his goons because Kamal Nath was chief minister.  Can Kamal Nath leave us?” Patwari asked.

A senior MP BJP functionary on condition of anonymity said Kamal Nath was too much of an old warhorse to not look out for his own political survival. “The only way he can sustain his political legacy after the recent election drubbing, at about 80 years of age, is to sail with the political current. In the BJP, Kamal Nath has a better chance of ensuring that his son or daughter-in-law continues his legacy,” the leader said.
